Social Emotional Learning

Welcome to the Social Emotional Learning site! My name is Kristin Pullen, Social Emotional Learning Specialist serving Maple Grove. This is a place for sharing resources and tools to enhance the social emotional wellness of the students, teachers, and families in our school community.

What is Social Emotional Learning?

The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) describes social emotional learning as “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” (, 2017).

The social emotional competency areas include:

  • Self Awareness
  • Self Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision Making

At Maple Grove, we use a curriculum called Second Step, to support social emotional learning with the following units of study:

  • Skills for learning (listening, focusing attention, using self talk, being assertive)
  • Empathy: ( identifying one's own and others' feelings, taking others' perspective, showing care and concern for others)
  • Emotion regulation (understanding strong feelings, identifying and managing strong feelings, calming down strong feelings)
  • Problem solving (making and keeping friends, calming down and using problem-solving steps)

Funding Source for SEL:

Jeffco school district has made a significant commitment to social emotional learning across our district. This is evident in the installation of 31 Social Emotional Learning Specialists (SELS) beginning in the 2016-17 school year with funds from the board of education. Additional funds were sought out by Jeffco to support additional SELS work in elementary and high schools. The SELS at Maple Grove is funded by the Jeffco’s School Health Professional Grant. This grant was awarded to Jeffco by the Colorado Department of Education to support 6 SELS in elementary schools and 3 nurses in high schools to demonstrate the role of SEL in substance use and abuse prevention. More information about this grant program can be found at the Colorado Department of Education.
